S.F. GO were a British trio. They came together out of Live Aid in 1985, formed by Chris Constantinou (also known as Chris De Niro) and Bogdan Wiczling (also known as Count Wiczling), both fresh from Adam Ant, with Danny Kustow, co-founder and guitarist of the Tom Robinson Band, on guitar and lead vocals. Chris played bass, Bogdan drums and keyboards, both sang backing vocals, and all three co-wrote every song.
Between them they brought a serious track record. Danny had toured the world with the Tom Robinson Band and gone on to form The Spectres with Glen Matlock. Chris had come up through The Drill, with Chas Chandler producing, before four years in Adam Ant's band took in Top of the Pops, Wogan, Saturday Night Live, American Bandstand and Live Aid. He went on to co-found The Wolfmen with Marco Pirroni, co-write 'Do The Ostrich' with Lou Reed, record a duet with Sinead O'Connor, play in The Mutants and One Thousand Motels with Rat Scabies, and records today as RudeGRL + CC. Bogdan had made his name with Fingerprintz on Virgin, one of the first bands on MTV, and had recorded with the likes of Lene Lovich, Bill Nelson, Rachel Sweet and Bill Wyman, and went on to record and tour with Adam Ant. Along the way the three had worked with producers of the calibre of Chris Thomas, Chris Hughes, Tony Visconti, Todd Rundgren, Chris Kimsey, Martin Rushent and Alan Winstanley.
S.F. GO recorded a full album across 1985 and 1986 at Bogdan's home studio in Battersea and at Globe Studios (Gerry Gill's) in South East London, with Gerry Gill mixing. As early as November 1986 the Mail on Sunday was tipping them, Gary Crowley calling them 'a tasty new band' with the green light. They toured the material, but the album was never released and has sat in the vaults ever since.
The songs draw on the three players' roots in punk, new wave and classic rock: melodic writing, strong guitar and driving rhythms, with a cinematic feel that sits well against film and television. It is a missing link between the Tom Robinson Band and Adam Ant, and a rare chance to hear Danny Kustow out front as a lead singer. Among the tapes are alternative takes with guest vocals: Kiki Dee on 'Talk Without Intention', and Hazel O'Connor with Rupert Everett on 'Ain't Your Boy'.
Newly mastered by James Young, the album is released for the first time by Cherry Red Records, digitally, four decades on.
